Il Gattopardo, the first and only novel by Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa (1896-1957), is the immortal portrait of the dying world of an aristocratic Sicilian family after the unification of Italy. The novel was published posthumously, in 1958, became the first Italian best-seller in 1959 and is today a classic of 20th century European literature. To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the publication of this iconic novel, Davide Messina (University of Edinburgh), in collaboration with the Italian Institute of Culture in Edinburgh, organised an international conference which was hosted by the National Library of Scotland (May 14, 2009). Among the distinguished speakers was the musicologist Gioacchino Lanza Tomasi, cousin and adoptive son of the writer. This volume gathers the proceedings of the conference as a valuable contribution to scholarly research on Lampedusa and Il Gattopardo.
